Ocean Swimming: Learning to Swim in a Moving World

Swimming in a pool is a remarkably controlled activity. The water is still, the depth is known, the temperature is usually regulated, and the lane lines tell you exactly where you are going. In a freshwater lake, conditions may be less predictable, but the water can still feel relatively quiet and forgiving.

The ocean is different.

Ocean swimming is not simply pool swimming performed in salt water. It is swimming in an environment that is constantly moving. Waves, swell, wind, tides, currents, temperature, the shape of the bottom, and even the time of day can change the experience. The swimmer must learn not only how to move through the water, but how to read the water itself. The National Park Service explicitly warns that ocean swimming is different from swimming in a pool or lake because wind, waves, tides, beach slope, and other factors can create strong currents, sometimes even when the surface looks calm.

The Water Is Never Quite Still

In a pool, if you stop swimming, you generally remain where you stopped. In the ocean, stopping does not necessarily mean stopping your movement.

A swell can lift and lower you without carrying you very far. A breaking wave can push you toward shore. A longshore current can gradually move you sideways. A rip current can carry you away from shore.

This changes the psychology of swimming.

A pool swimmer tends to think in terms of distance: I have swum 500 yards, and I have another 500 to go. An ocean swimmer has to think in terms of both distance and conditions: Where am I in relation to the shore? What is the current doing? What will the next set of waves do?

That is one reason a modest ocean swim can feel much harder than the same distance in a pool. NOAA notes that a distance that is easy in a pool can become extremely difficult when waves and currents are added.

Salt Water Changes the Feel

There is also a physical difference between seawater and freshwater.

Seawater is denser than freshwater, so it provides slightly more buoyancy. Many swimmers notice that it is easier to float in the ocean. The sensation can be pleasant: the body seems to sit a little higher in the water, and relaxed floating requires somewhat less effort.

But the greater buoyancy does not make ocean swimming easier overall.

A swimmer may be floating comfortably one moment and then have to contend with a wave, current, cold water, or choppy surface the next. The ocean gives you a little more lift while simultaneously taking away the stability and predictability of a swimming pool.

And then there is the salt itself.

Salt water gets into the mouth. It can sting the eyes. Swallowing a little is unpleasant. After a long swim, dried salt can leave the skin feeling tight and rough. None of these things is particularly serious, but together they contribute to the unmistakable experience of ocean swimming.

Waves Change Your Stroke

A pool rewards rhythm.

You push off the wall, establish your stroke, breathe at regular intervals, and settle into a predictable pattern. The bottom remains stationary beneath you.

In the ocean, your rhythm has to adapt.

A small wave arriving from the front may require you to alter your breathing or stroke momentarily. A larger wave may force you to dive underneath it or allow it to pass. Choppy water can make breathing on one side considerably more difficult than the other.

This is particularly important for freestyle swimmers. In a pool, you can turn your head to breathe with confidence that nothing unexpected is about to hit you in the face. In the ocean, the precise moment you turn your head may coincide with a wave.

Experienced open-water swimmers therefore learn to breathe on both sides. Bilateral breathing is useful because it allows the swimmer to choose the side with the calmer water and to keep an eye on surrounding conditions.

It also helps to learn the difference between swimming through a wave and fighting it. Sometimes the most efficient response to rough water is not to overpower it but to relax, maintain position, and let the water's movement pass.

You Lose the Pool's Landmarks

One of the strangest experiences for a new ocean swimmer is discovering how difficult it can be to swim in a straight line.

A pool gives you a black line on the bottom, lane ropes, walls, flags, and other swimmers as references. The ocean gives you a horizon.

Even a good swimmer can gradually veer off course while looking down at the water. This is why open-water swimming involves a technique called sighting: periodically lifting the eyes or head enough to determine where you are going.

Sighting has to be incorporated into the stroke without completely destroying its rhythm. The goal is not to stop and look around. It is to take brief visual readings and then return to the normal stroke.

This produces another fundamental difference between pool swimming and ocean swimming: navigation becomes part of swimming technique.

Currents Are the Great Invisible Difference

Waves are obvious. Currents can be almost invisible.

A swimmer may enter apparently calm water and gradually discover that the beach is no longer where it seemed to be. A current can move a person sideways along the coast, while a rip current can carry water away from shore through the surf zone.

Rip currents are particularly important for beach swimmers. They are narrow, powerful channels of water moving offshore and can be faster than even very strong swimmers can swim directly against. NOAA recommends not fighting a rip current by trying to swim straight back toward shore. Instead, swimmers should stay calm, float if necessary, and swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the strongest part of the current before returning toward land.

The crucial lesson is that being a strong pool swimmer does not automatically make someone a strong ocean swimmer.

Ocean swimming demands environmental awareness in addition to physical ability.

Freshwater Is Somewhere in Between

Freshwater open-water swimming—particularly in a large lake—is much closer to ocean swimming than it is to pool swimming in some respects.

A lake has no salt, and many lakes have less wave action than the ocean. But large lakes can still produce waves, wind-driven currents, cold water, limited visibility, and rapidly changing conditions.

The major difference is often one of degree rather than kind.

A small, sheltered lake on a calm morning can feel almost like an enormous swimming pool. A large lake during strong winds can feel surprisingly oceanic.

The ocean, however, adds the complication of tides and surf, along with the possibility of powerful coastal currents and breaking waves. The National Park Service emphasizes that ocean conditions can change from day to day and even hour to hour.

Temperature Is a Bigger Factor

Pool swimmers become accustomed to water temperatures designed for prolonged swimming.

The ocean does not make that promise.

Depending on location and season, seawater can be very cold. Cold water changes swimming technique, breathing, comfort, and endurance. The first seconds after entering can be especially challenging as the body adjusts to the temperature.

A cold-water swimmer may find that the most important skill at first is simply learning to remain calm. Sudden immersion can produce an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing, making relaxed swimming difficult.

This is one reason gradual acclimatization matters. A swimmer who is perfectly comfortable doing a long workout in a warm pool should not assume that the same workout is appropriate in cold open water.

The Ocean Requires Observation

Perhaps the biggest conceptual difference is that a pool asks you to control yourself, while the ocean asks you to understand your surroundings.

Before swimming, an ocean swimmer should look at the water.

How large are the waves? Where are they breaking? Is there an obvious channel of moving water? Are there sandbars? Where are the lifeguards? What do the warning flags mean? What does the weather and rip-current forecast say?

NOAA recommends checking conditions before entering, swimming near lifeguards, never swimming alone, and staying out when conditions are unsafe.

Learning to read the water becomes part of becoming an ocean swimmer.

A Different Kind of Fitness

Ocean swimming can also reveal weaknesses that are invisible in the pool.

A swimmer might possess excellent cardiovascular fitness but struggle with choppy water. Another might have a beautiful pool stroke but become uncomfortable when unable to see the bottom. Someone else might discover that breathing to only one side becomes a serious limitation when waves consistently arrive from that direction.

Open-water fitness therefore includes more than speed and endurance.

It includes the ability to remain calm, navigate, adjust one's stroke, tolerate changing conditions, conserve energy, and recognize when conditions are becoming inappropriate for one's ability.

That last skill is perhaps the most important of all.

The ocean does not care how fast you can swim.

Learning to Become an Ocean Swimmer

The best transition from pool swimming to ocean swimming is gradual.

Start in calm, supervised conditions. Swim with another person. Become comfortable with the sensation of salt water, waves, and reduced visibility. Practice breathing on both sides. Practice sighting. Learn what a rip current looks like and what to do if you encounter one.

And begin by treating the ocean as an environment rather than simply as a very large swimming pool.

A pool tells you where the walls are.

The ocean does not.

A pool stays essentially where you left it.

The ocean is moving before you enter, while you swim, and after you leave.

That is precisely what makes ocean swimming so different—and, for many swimmers, so compelling. Once the initial strangeness disappears, the swimmer begins to cooperate with the movement rather than resist it. Waves become something to read. Swell becomes part of the rhythm. The horizon becomes the lane line.

You are no longer simply swimming through water.

You are swimming through a landscape that moves.
