Decoding the Fretboard: How to Read Guitar Tablature
Guitar tablature (or "tab") is a simplified, visual notation system designed specifically for fretted instruments. Unlike traditional sheet music, which requires reading musical pitches, tab shows you exactly where to place your fingers on the fretboard. Whether you're learning your first riff or decoding a complex solo, here is a quick guide to reading guitar tab.
1. The Lines and Numbers
A standard guitar tab consists of six horizontal lines representing the six strings of the guitar:
E |---------------------------------| (High E - 1st string) B |---------------------------------| G |---------------------------------| D |---------------------------------| A |---------------------------------| E |---------------------------------| (Low E - 6th string)
The Lines: The top line represents the highest-pitched string (thin E), while the bottom line represents the lowest-pitched string (thick E).
The Numbers: Numbers placed on the lines indicate which fret to press down. A 0 means playing the string open (unfretted).
Left to Right: Read the tab sequentially from left to right, just like reading a sentence.
2. Notes vs. Chords
Single Notes (Melodies): When numbers appear stacked sequentially across the grid, play them one after another.
E |---------------------------------| B |---------------------------------| G |---------------------------------| D |----0---2---3--------------------| A |---------------------------------| E |---------------------------------|
Chords: When numbers are stacked vertically directly on top of each other, hit those strings simultaneously.
E |--3------------------------------| (G Major Chord) B |--0------------------------------| G |--0------------------------------| D |--0------------------------------| A |--2------------------------------| E |--3------------------------------|
3. Common Technique Symbols
Guitar tab uses letters and symbols between numbers to indicate performance techniques:
| Symbol | Technique | Description |
|---|---|---|
| h | Hammer-on | Pick the first note, then tap the second note down firmly with a fret-hand finger (3h5). |
| p | Pull-off | Pick the first note, then snap your finger off to sound the lower note (5p3). |
| / or \ | Slide | Pick the first note and slide your finger up (/) or down (\) to the next fret (3/5). |
| b | Bend | Push or pull the string upward to raise the pitch (7b9). |
| ~ | Vibrato | Rapidly wobble the fretted note slightly up and down for expression (5~). |
| x | Muted String | Rest a finger lightly on the string without pressing down to create a rhythmic, percussive click. |
Tip: Standard tab indicates where to place your fingers, but it rarely shows exact rhythmic timing or note durations. Always listen to the song while reading the tab to get the rhythm right!
